At 2,500 gallons this is a bulk storage vessel rather than a domestic tank. It serves very large homes, commercial buildings, and properties running heating alongside auxiliary loads on a single supply.
Above ground or buried
Both are supported. The usual reason for burying a vessel this size is simply that a 2,500 gallon tank above ground is a large and visually dominant object; underground it is invisible apart from the dome. The tank is finished in a durable red oxide powder coating suited to burial.

A vessel this size carries substantial setback and permitting requirements under NFPA 58 and your state and local authority, and underground installation additionally requires prepared excavation, correct backfill and cathodic protection.
