ASME Spherical Storage Tanks
Spherical vessels are used where large volumes of pressurised or below-ambient-temperature liquefied gas must be stored — LPG and propane, and also ammonia, propylene and butadiene.
Why a sphere rather than a cylinder
A sphere spreads internal pressure evenly across its whole surface, so for a given pressure and volume it needs less steel than any other shape. That advantage grows with size, which is why bulk pressurised storage moves from horizontal cylinders to spheres above a certain capacity. A sphere also has the smallest surface area for its volume, which reduces heat gain — relevant when the contents are held below ambient temperature.
Specification
Built to ASME standard. Capacities are quoted to requirement; the reference configuration is 2,500 cubic metres, approximately 1,250 tons of LPG. Thermal insulation is specified according to service temperature.
Ordering
These are engineered, built-to-order vessels rather than stock items. Lead time, foundation design, transport and site assembly all depend on the specification and the destination.
