Why a 500 gallon tank holds 425
Propane is stored as a liquid under pressure and expands significantly as it warms, so a tank is filled to around 80% of nominal volume to leave vapour space for that expansion. The 425 gallon figure is what you can actually take, and it is the number to plan deliveries around rather than the 500 on the label.
Typical applications
Whole-home heating, or a home plus a pool heater or generator. Burying the tank is generally chosen so the vessel is not visible, which is the main reason to accept the extra installation cost over an above-ground equivalent.
Installation
Prepared excavation, correct backfill and cathodic protection are all required, governed by NFPA 58 and your state and local authority, and installation must be carried out by a licensed propane professional.
