Why 1,000 gallons holds 850
Propane is stored as a liquid under pressure and expands as it warms, so tanks are filled to around 80–85% of nominal volume to leave vapour space for that expansion. The 850 gallon figure is what you can actually take, and it is the number to plan deliveries and running costs around rather than the 1,000 on the label.
Typical applications
This is a whole-property capacity. It suits a large home or commercial space and comfortably carries additional load — a pool heater, a standby generator — on the same supply without the refill frequency a smaller tank would bring.
Above ground siting
Above-ground installation avoids excavation, backfill and cathodic protection, which makes it substantially cheaper and quicker to commission than burying an equivalent vessel. It also keeps the tank accessible for inspection and gauge reading. The trade-off is that a tank this size is a visible object and must sit at compliant setback distances from buildings, boundaries and ignition sources.
Siting is governed by NFPA 58 and by your state and local authority, and the tank needs a level, firm prepared base. Installation must be carried out by a licensed propane professional.
