Above-ground tanks cost less to install: no excavation, no backfill and no anode protection, and the tank stays accessible for inspection and gauge reading. They are painted rather than coated for burial, which is why a tank sold for above-ground use must never be buried. Sizes run from 120 gallon for one or two appliances, through 250, 320 and 500 gallon for home heating, to 1,000 and 1,500 gallon for large properties. Prices run $470 to $4,350.
