What the riser and anode are for
The riser brings the tank’s fittings and gauge up to ground level, so the valve assembly stays accessible for filling and inspection once the vessel is buried. The anode is a sacrificial magnesium block wired to the tank: soil corrodes steel, and the anode is made to corrode preferentially so the tank does not. Both are requirements of a compliant underground installation rather than optional extras, which is why they are supplied with the tank.
Installation
Underground installation requires prepared excavation, correct backfill and connection of the anode, all governed by NFPA 58 and by your state and local authority, and all to be carried out by a licensed propane professional.
