Why the anode is included
A buried steel tank sits in continuous contact with soil, and soil corrodes steel. A sacrificial magnesium anode is wired to the tank and corrodes preferentially, protecting the vessel. It is a required part of a compliant underground installation, not an accessory, which is why one is supplied with the tank.
Installation
Underground installation requires excavation prepared to specification, correct backfill, and connection of the anode for cathodic protection — all governed by NFPA 58 and by your state and local authority, and all to be carried out by a licensed propane professional.
