Description
120 Gallon (420 lb) ASME Propane Tank, Vertical
A new vertical ASME steel propane tank, also sold as a 420 lb tank, built by Manchester Tank in the USA. It is the largest size that still stands upright on a small footprint, which is why it suits a single appliance or two where a horizontal 250 gallon tank will not fit.
Usable capacity: about 96 gallons
Propane tanks are filled to 80% of rated capacity, so a 120 gallon tank holds about 96 usable gallons. The remaining space lets the liquid expand as temperature rises.

What a 120 gallon tank supports
- A water heater and range together
- A gas fireplace or a pool heater used seasonally
- Supplemental heat, or a small cabin used part of the year
Heating the whole house on propane? Step up to the 250 gallon tank or the 500 gallon tank. Our propane tank sizes guide compares every size we stock.
Before you order
- Check setback rules. Distances from openings, property lines and ignition sources are set by local code and NFPA 58.
- Prepare a level base. A concrete pad or pavers keep a vertical tank stable.
- Confirm who fills it. Not every supplier fills customer-owned tanks.
- Use a trained installer for connection and first fill.
Questions about this tank
How much propane does a 120 gallon tank hold? About 96 gallons. Tanks are filled to 80% of rated capacity so the liquid has room to expand.
Is a 420 lb propane tank the same as a 120 gallon tank? Yes. 420 lb is the weight of propane the tank holds when full; 120 gallons is its water capacity. Both names describe the same tank.
What will a 120 gallon propane tank run? One or two appliances, typically a water heater and a range, a gas fireplace, or supplemental heat. For whole-home heat, a 250 or 500 gallon tank is the usual choice.
ASME or DOT: what is the difference? Both are certified pressure vessels. This ASME tank uses thicker steel, about 13 lb heavier than the DOT version of the same size, and is meant to stay in place and be filled on site.
How much does a 120 gallon propane tank cost? This new ASME tank is $1,040. Our other 120 gallon tanks run from $741 to $1,450 depending on ASME or DOT rating, orientation and condition.
